When I first met my husband at the age of 44, I did not even realize how much his hearing loss would impact our communication and relationship. I began to see that he was putting so much mental energy into reading lips and trying to discern what I was saying and I can’t imagine how frustrating that must’ve felt. That first day and then those first several months after he received his hearing aids, it was life-changing for him and for us. I was no longer repeating myself four and five times. The TV volume could be set at a normal level. He could hear the waitress when we were out to eat even with a lot of background noise. And most of all I noticed that my extroverted and outgoing husband was able to truly be himself because he could clearly hear conversations and words. His brain was no longer working overtime to understand what people were saying. Pivotal is the word that comes to mind when I think about my partner being given the gift of hearing again. For anyone on the fence about this decision, I say go for it! The investment has so many high returns!
